About the Vietnam Go Association

Our Mission

The Vietnam Go Association is dedicated to promoting the ancient game of Go (Cờ vây) throughout Vietnam. Our mission is to:

  • Increase awareness and appreciation of Go in Vietnam
  • Develop and support Go players of all ages and skill levels
  • Organize tournaments and competitions to foster the competitive spirit
  • Maintain an accurate rating system for tracking player progress
  • Represent Vietnam in international Go events and competitions

The Glicko-2 Rating System

Our association uses the Glicko-2 rating system to track player performance. Developed by Professor Mark Glickman as an improvement on the Elo rating system, Glicko-2 takes into account three key parameters:

Rating

A number that estimates a player's skill level. In our system, a higher number indicates a stronger player.

Rating Deviation (RD)

Measures the uncertainty in a player's rating. A lower RD indicates more certainty about a player's true skill level.

Volatility

Tracks how consistent a player's performance is over time. Lower volatility means more consistent results.

Rank System

In the world of Go, players are traditionally ranked using a system of kyu (级) and dan (段) grades:

  • Kyu grades (20-1 kyu): Beginner to intermediate levels, with 1 kyu being the strongest
  • Dan grades (1-9 dan): Advanced levels, with 9 dan being the strongest

Our rating system automatically assigns ranks based on a player's Glicko-2 rating as follows:
